Brent Council | Disabled Children & Young People Team | Children’s Team Manager (Short Breaks)

🔎 About the Role:

This role involves managing a team responsible for the assessment, allocation, and review of targeted and short break resources for disabled children and young people, where access to these resources is determined through a Child and Family Assessment.

The postholder will ensure the robust management of a caseload of approximately 300 cases, providing oversight of the allocation and review processes to support timely and well-informed decision-making. A key responsibility of the role is the effective management and monitoring of an annual budget of up to ÂŁ3 million, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and in line with assessed needs.

 

💼 Key Responsibilities:

  • Make a positive contribution to the delivery of the service, working flexibly and positively to achieve the objectives of the council.
  • Manage and lead staff to achieve high performance and effective operational delivery, including developing and improving staff capability.
  • Manage a customer focused service and the effective use of resources.
  • Ensure that the council’s overall vision, values and ethos are central to the requirements of the service.
  • Support effective working relationships and act as an ambassador and advocate with external organisations.
  • Keep up to date with developments in service delivery and best practice to ensure the service performs effectively and to the highest standards.
  • Have oversight on the use of the allocation system to ensure recommendations for allocation of resources are fair, relevant to the needs of the child/young person/family and consistent.
  • Ensure the notes of review meetings carried out by the team are accurate and comprehensive and support recommendations for decisions on future eligibility for resources.
  • To check and approve recommendations for allocation of short break resources based on outcomes of the Resource Allocation System to facilitate timely and and well-informed decisions.
  • Attend panel meetings either in a lead or support capacity to present recommendations on the allocation of resources for consideration and approval.
  • Work closely with the Social Work teams to anticipate potential demand for assessments to support the planning and effective use of resources within the team.
  • Contribute to commissioning and quality assurance activities to ensure Short Break providers focus on outcomes which are driven to meet the needs of children, young people and their families.
  • To ensure efficient record keeping systems are maintained to monitor children and young people’s progress, report back to parent and other professionals and contribute to the evaluation of the service.
  • To keep up to date with current legislation, policies and practice in relation to SEND, equal opportunities, health and safety and child protection.
  • Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and all employees are required to act in such a way that at all times safeguards the health and well-being of children and vulnerable adults.
  • Carry out duties with due regard to the Council’s Customer Care, Equal Opportunities, Information Governance, Data Protection, Health and Safety and Emergency Planning & Awareness (including to provide assistance where available) policies and procedures.
  • Embed environmental sustainability into their work, actively contributing to Brent becoming a carbon-neutral borough in 2030.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the general level of responsibility of this post.

 

✅ Requirements:

  • Qualified Social Worker
  • Registered with Social Work England
  • Evidence of significant relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Experience working in a range of roles across social care including children with disabilities and with different client groups.
  • Experience of managing a team’s performance and budgets.
  • Eligible to work in the UK
