About the Role:
We are seeking a Residential Worker to work across our SEND Short Break Service at Wakefield Metropolitan District Council.
The Residential Worker will provide high standards and improve the outcomes of children and young people (including post 18 year olds) with severe learning disabilities, physical disabilities and or other disabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- To work in line with the Statement of Purpose and aims of Wasdale Resource Centre.
- To promote the development of children and young people, to meet their assessed needs through the provision of appropriate emotional, physical and material care.
- To participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of individual children’s and young people’s (including post 18 year olds) care plans and undertake the role of key worker for individual children and young people.
- Evidence the progress of children and young people i.e. through compiling reports, including, but not limited to; key work, reviews and incident reporting.
- To contribute to the assessment, planning and decision making processes for individual children and young people.
- To maintain up-to-date case records and care plans in respect of individual children and young people.
- Contribute to, develop and make themselves aware of the Individual Crisis Management Plans for children whose behaviour challenges the service.
- Contribute to, develop and make themselves aware of the children and young peoples’ individual Risk Assessments and other key documents.
- Promote positive behaviour and manage difficult situations through de-escalation skills.
- Contribute to and develop safe ways of working within the therapeutic crisis intervention framework.
- To be responsible for the administration and safe keeping of prescribed medication.
- With appropriate training administer medication to specific children in line with Children and Young People’s Services Policy.
- Attend and contribute to team meetings and consultations with professional visitors in order to support and enable development of the home.
- Assisting children to develop individual non-verbal communication skills and act as the child’s advocate by helping others understand the child’s means of communication.
- Provide and promote the individual child’s equality, diversity and rights.
- To attend meetings and participate as required.
- To develop and maintain positive relationships with the children and young people, their parents and other family members.
- To develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff and other professionals, internal and external to the Directorate, and with neighbours and the local community.
- To contribute to the development of short break services and activities with particular regard to the quality of service provision either within the home or outside across the district.
- To contribute to the maintenance of the Children’s Homes Regulations and Quality Standards.
- To contribute to the maintenance of the relevant regulations of the Care Quality Commission and Health and Social Care Act 2008.
- To support any inspections by the Directorate, OFSTED or Care Quality Commission.
- To undertake transporting and/or escorting of children and young people (including post 18 year olds) to and from the home.
- To work with other staff to maintain standards of decoration, cleanliness, tidiness and hygiene within the home.
- Prepare, cook and serve meals in accordance with dietary requirements.
- An expectation that the post holder will participate fully in supervision and appraisal.
- Staff must be aware and adhere to the provision of the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure their own safety and the safety of the children and young people and visitors.
- To support the operation of group activities/work and to engage in the process of identifying locations, activities and group mix alongside the management team.
- To work effectively with partner agencies, to break down barriers to children and young people (including post 18 year olds), and their families engaging within support that leads to positive outcomes.
- To contribute to effective interventions that promotes the engagement of children and young people (including post 18 year olds), parents and extended family.
- To work in partnership with families to promote as paramount the safe emotional well-being of both children and parents/carers.
Requirements:
- NVQ 3, Diploma L3 in residential child care or L4 Apprenticeship Children, Young People and Families Practitioner is required
- Relevant Adult qualification / training to meet the needs of CQC Registration.
- Must have experience of SEND
- First Aid and Behaviour Management training is essential
- Detailed experience of working with children and young people or children and their families who are experiencing difficulties and / or have disability.
